GLMZ Universe — Universal World Facts

Authoritative source for facts that apply to every story in the GLMZ universe. Synced to Universe.WorldFacts (DB) via prose --sync-markdown and injected into every generation prompt. Story-specific content belongs in docs/nodes/<CODE>.md, not here.

Rule of thumb: if the fact would need to be true in all stories, it belongs here.

Setting

Year: 2226. Location: GLMZ — Great Lakes Metropolitan Zone (also: The Glooms, street vernacular). Formerly the U.S. Midwest. Population: ~58 million. Chicago is the transit and commercial hub; the Lake itself is the geographic axis.

The world is 200 years in the future. Coastal infrastructure has collapsed: New York, Boston, LA, Miami are uninhabitable. The cities that survived were those that could be defended inland or elevated above flood lines. A few megalopolises survived globally: Shanghai, Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro, Mexico City, Jakarta. The Pulse connects them.

Genre: Literary cyberpunk. Close-third POV. Prose is accessible with sensory detail and withheld interiority — what characters feel surfaces in action and observed data, not emotional narration. The city is not cartoonishly dystopian. It is a place where most people have figured out how to live, and some of them are even happy. The tragedy is structural, not theatrical.

2100s–2140s Schism zones multiply; federal jurisdiction becomes theoretical in affected regions; corporations fill the void
2130s Missouri flood years accumulate; federal disaster response never arrives at scale
2150s Kentucky lost to Schism zone expansion; called a "disaster zone" — still is
2153 Korea unifies under an isolationist compact
2158 Last meaningful federal enforcement action in the GLMZ region
2160s Neuretics emerge — neuro-lace polymer mesh grown into living brain tissue

Officers who surrender are detained; officers who resist are killed. 847 officers dead by dawn. Official framing: "Emergency Public Safety Transfer during municipal fiscal crisis." Within 36 hours every precinct is an Arcturus checkpoint. The city police ceases to exist. Arcturus rebrands its enforcement arm "ArcSec" within the year.
2210s E.L.F.s begin emerging from Substrate code-fragment complexity
2226 Present day

Why CorpoNations have power: They were not handed power in a single coup. Over sixty years, institutions that needed someone to pay for what they could no longer afford ceded authority incrementally. By the time CorpoNation sovereignty was the practical reality, the alternative had already failed slowly enough that nobody sounded the alarm.

The Pulse — Global Magnetic Transit

The Pulse is the global magnetic linear accelerator transit network. Vacuum tubes bored through continental bedrock and laid on ocean floors. Pods move at Mach 5–6 (~6,000 kph).

Routes: Chicago → Rotterdam: 43 min. Chicago → Lagos: 51 min. Chicago → Osaka: 97 min (via Bering Strait arc, the longest route).

The Blur: The in-universe name for a Pulse transit — the entire journey between boarding and arrival. Not a geographic zone. Not jurisdictional. Everything passes so fast it can't be locked onto: the whole ride is called The Blur. "She watched Iowa in The Blur." "The Blur thinned" (arriving). Correct usage: "somewhere in The Blur" = during transit.

Pulse pod mechanic — spheres + Hyper Reality: Physically, passengers ride in individual sealed spheres (one per person), pitch-black inside, lit only by the GIDS-4 status ring. During transit, neuretics wire together and surface a shared Hyper Reality: a vintage intercity train from 200 years earlier — seats, aisles, overhead racks, window feeds from external cameras mounted on the pod exterior. Other passengers are visible across the aisle; they are each in their own sealed sphere, their social presence rendered by the shared construct. Passengers call their pod "the car." Nobody finds this odd. When the slug reaches the destination platform and the sphere cracks open, the train dissolves mid-breath. Characters describe this as: stepping off an empty platform, or a room evaporating. The sphere underneath is never described from inside; characters experience only the Hyper Reality. See [## Hyper Reality](#SS-GLMZ-hyperreality) for the full canon.

GIDS-4 (Gradient Inertial Distribution System): Why passengers survive 19g acceleration. The superconducting interior coil array acts on every ferromagnetic/conductive component simultaneously. Result: ~0.3g subjective during the 47-second Punch. Unaugmented passengers feel ~0.9g. Coupling vests available at Chicago Station Gate 7 service counter.

Key Pulse vocabulary:

  • Slug — vernacular for a transit pod ("personal slug," "cargo slug")
  • The Punch — 47-second acceleration phase
  • The Flip — sequence reversal at geometric midpoint
  • The Catch — deceleration phase; mirrors The Punch
  • Coasting — peak Mach 6; perfect stillness
  • Threading — departure induction loop cycling; 1–3 loops waiting for a flow gap
  • Thrumline — 8 Hz bone-vibration felt in buildings above Pulse corridors
  • Ferrogate Transit — franchise operator for GLMZ Pulse segments

Chicago Station: 6 international + 14 continental spurs; ~280,000 passengers/day. Tier 4 sponsorship required for entry. Personal slug cost ≈ 40× a Tier 1 resident's monthly UBC.

Governed by the Pulse Interconnect Accord (2167): 23 corponations + 3 surviving national governments set pod dimensions, coil specs, pressurization. No single entity controls the full network — regional franchise holders per segment.

Neuretics

Neuretics are neural mesh grown into brain tissue — not implanted hardware, grown. Integration takes 8–24 months and can fail catastrophically (autoimmune rejection = death without nano bridging). Everyone with neuretics has neuretic etching: visible external trace of mesh at the skull's nerve ports (temples, jaw, behind ears). Grade signals money.

What each tier actually does:

Tier Access Capability
Tier 1 Common; corpo-subsidized Basic AR overlay, communications, ID verification
Tier 2 Mid-tier; requires employment contract Sensory enhancement, memory indexing
Tier 3 High-tier; restricted Tactical processing, heuristic combat assist
Tier 4 / Sovereign Experimental or illegal Full-stack cognitive expansion; models interlocutor's likely response before they finish speaking

Praxis NeoCortex brand tiers (Praxis is the manufacturer; NeoCortex is the consumer-facing brand; see SS-LAW-21 for what Praxis actually is): Standard (12 threads) → Extend (48) → Prime (240) → Sovereign (2,400 threads, Φ600/day, Accord registration required)

(Note: the Sovereign tier was formerly labeled "Atlas" — an artifact of the prior corporate name, now retired.)

The Governor — thermal/electrochemical survival system in all neuretics (not a performance cap). Ungoverned Sovereign-tier = fatal within 1–3 years.

Growth-window lock: Neuretics must be grown during a developmental window; nearly universal lock after ~age twelve. Rare adult-open cases exist but are exceptional.

Cognitive divide: ~18% global population remains unaugmented. The gap between unaugmented → Tier 1 → Tier 4 is qualitative, not gradient. Tier 1 subsidized in core districts via NeoCortex Access Initiative.

GLMZ penetration: In GLMZ specifically, neuretics penetration exceeds 92% of the resident population. The 18% global figure reflects regions without access infrastructure; GLMZ is not one of them. In GLMZ prose, assume neuretics as default. Unaugmented characters are notable and should be treated as exceptions with specific reasons (late arrival, religious objection, failed integration, deliberate choice). The neuretic auto-identification overlay (see Consumer Culture §) is the default perceptual layer for nearly every character in every GLMZ story.

ECT — Eigenstate Conscience Transfer (Ghosting): The protocol for a Ghost operator to occupy a machine body. See SS-LAW-26 for operator class vocabulary.

  • Husk — the biological body at rest while the Ghost is displaced
  • Shell — the machine body being occupied
  • Ghosting — the act of ECT; street verb ("she ghosted the door green")
  • Surfacing — leaving a Shell; eigenstate reseats in the Husk

Vocabulary rules: Ghost operators ghost into or transit Shells. They surface or return to their Husk. Never "transfer" or "upload" — those imply copying, not relocation. Retired terms (SS-LAW-26): "Rider", "Exo", "RFO", "inject/ride/slot" as operator vocabulary, "NSB (Neuretic Substrate Bridging)", "CEP (Coherent Eigenstate Projection)".

The physics: The operator's neuretic array encodes their active cognitive state as a coherent eigenstate waveform and projects it into any resonant cavity with a compatible neural bus — the Shell. Nothing is copied or transmitted; the cognitive process itself migrates, the way a standing wave can be sustained in a second medium. The Husk drops to managed low-activity suspension for the duration — breathing, alive, absent. Return requires a clean handshake between the Shell's neural bus and the waiting Husk; a disrupted handshake (Black Ice attack, hardware failure, forced extraction) carries seizure risk that scales with how long the projection has been displaced, and extended forced displacement is fatal. The same underlying eigenstate physics governs Eigenlift (see Aerostatic Architecture) — applied to mass instead of mind.

GLMZ Geography

No official zone numbering. GLMZ has no official Z1–Z12 designation system. Districts and neighborhoods use their own names. Do not number them.

Ferrocement Wave: A curved flood barrier 60–90 meters tall that rings the lakefront. Not a wall in the military sense — there are official gates — but crossing it without authorization is its own kind of statement. Inside is GLMZ; outside is the Territories.

Key named districts:

  • The Loop — Chicago core; prestige corporate towers, arcology rows, banking; highest ArcSec presence
  • Bloom Quarter — nanotech R&D and biomodification district; legal-gray clinics, corpo labs, body-mod culture; Substrate coverage degraded here (see Nanotechnology)
  • The Yards — western lakeshore industrial strip; shipyards, heavy manufacturing, Iowan Behemoth staging grounds
  • Gray Zone — ungoverned buffer between CorpoNation arcologies; where operators, Splicers, and scavs work; not a slum — a free-fire zone of opportunity and danger

Critical distinction — Tier vs. Altitude:

  • Tier = social class and access privilege (1–5); controlled by CorpoNation sponsorship
  • Altitude = real estate and physical location; no automatic mapping between them These are independent axes. A Tier 5 resident can choose street level. A Tier 1 resident cannot afford the float layer. Do not conflate them.

Altitude = class in practice:

  • Sky People — most privileged residents; altitude physically separates money from the city below
  • Float layer — aeroblocs, aeroquarters (Float Districts), aeropolises (Cloudtowns); wealth lives here
  • The Low (30–320m) — ungoverned gap: ArcSec patrol ceiling ~50m, MATA radar floor 320m; neither covers this band → gray-market vertical transit, industrial haze, building-wake turbulence
  • Street level — where most stories happen

The Spine — the western lakeshore corridor specifically: Chicago → Milwaukee → Green Bay.

Green Bay — full metropolis, low millions population. Not a frontier town.

Building scale: Heights increase toward the Lake. Buildings over one mile high (~1,609m) are common in the inner districts — made possible by ferrocrete composites. CorpoNation arcologies are the tallest structures, clearing even supertall residential towers.

Space elevator — visible over the southern horizon from GLMZ; operational; most residents stop noticing after a year. Street names: the Thread, the Stitch. Corporate designation: Apex Tether Authority (ATA), private concessional operator.

At night, the Thread is the most striking object in the southern sky: a near-invisible filament rising from the horizon to a point that vanishes into the upper atmosphere, and along it the cargo and transit pods rise and descend like a gossamer string of water droplets — lit against the dark, widely spaced, moving so slowly they seem still until you track one for a few seconds and watch it drift. The tether itself is not visible without augmentation; the pods are the visual. GLMZ residents who grew up with it do not see it anymore. Visitors and people having a very good or very bad night always do.

Prose ground rule: Any night scene with a clear view of the southern sky — outdoor, rooftop, elevated, wide open — must include at least one reference to the Thread. It does not need to be foregrounded; a single clause is enough. The character's relationship to it (noticing it / not noticing it / watching a pod for a moment) is a register detail.

Social Structure

No police. ArcSec (Arcturus Military Command, field enforcement arm of Arcturus Defense Solutions) replaced the city police in 2096 — the Blue Massacre. Law enforcement is now private. ArcSec is simultaneously a civil security monopoly and a for-profit corporation: it polices where it is contracted to police.

  • ArcSec — dominant in high-Tier districts and wherever clients pay
  • Uncontracted areas: private crew security, CorpoNation guards, or nothing

UBC (Universal Base Credit) — minimum subsistence income from CorpoNations to Tier 1–2 residents. Not enough to live on. Enough to make people dependent.

Tier system (1–5): Tier 5 = ultra-privileged elite (may have informal sub-tiers for extreme elites); Tier 4 = high access/privilege; Tier 1 = minimal survival support. Sponsorship tokens — tradeable instruments; professional sponsors monetize their tier status. Movement between tiers is controlled by CorpoNation sponsorship.

Block Wars — territorial conflicts between CorpoNations over Gray Zone buffer space. Ongoing, low-level, economically motivated. Residents treat them as weather.

Border Markets — neutral-ground trading posts at Gray Zone / arcology perimeters. Goods and people move through them that wouldn't survive either side's legal framework.

Hyper Reality {#SS-GLMZ-hyperreality}

Hyper Reality is the GLMZ term for everything perceived through neuretic augmentation that has no physical counterpart — overlays, constructs, shared hallucinations, branded skins on bare physical substrate. Not a metaphor. A condition.

The Pulse train interior is the canonical Hyper Reality: passengers in pitch-black sealed acceleration spheres share a neuretically-constructed vintage intercity train car — seats, overhead racks, window feeds from external cameras, other passengers visible across the aisle. The other passengers are real people in their own pods; the Hyper Reality lets them occupy a social space together without being physically co-located. Nobody finds this unusual. The train is more real than the pod, because the pod is just dark.

How it works in the archologies: Physical infrastructure in archology zones is built as Hyper Reality substrate — walls optimized for AR rendering, corridors tiled in machine-readable surfacing, ceilings calibrated for projection geometry. Strip the overlay in an archology lobby and you find engineered blankness: featureless panels, ambient drone, the building equivalent of a green screen. The Hyper Reality IS the architecture. The physical form is just load-bearing.

Tiered access: Premium neuretic tiers (Praxis Sovereign, equivalent) receive curated Hyper Reality — clean interfaces, minimal commercial intrusion, bespoke environmental skins. Standard and Extend tiers receive the ad-supported layer: every surface in the overlay is a monetized impression, every AR product emitter fires its animation whether the character wants it or not. The commercial density of someone's Hyper Reality is a direct readout of their economic tier. NCID forensics can tell where you've been and what tier you ride by the ad-fingerprint in your overlay history.

Gray zone: No substrate optimization. No AR emitter infrastructure. The physical world in the gray zone looks like itself — concrete, rust, hand-painted signage, the actual colors of things. Augmented characters arriving from inside the Veil notice the Hyper Reality going quiet before they notice anything else. The silence is disorienting. Some describe it as vertigo. Some describe it as the first breath of cold air after a long time indoors.

Unaugmented perspective: The unaugmented see the substrate wherever they go — the blank panels, the purposeless corridors, the physical world designed to mean nothing without an overlay. Archology spaces are incomprehensible to the unaugmented: no wayfinding, no pricing, no identity display on the people passing them. They are commercially invisible and spatially lost. This is not metaphorical — the archologies were designed that way intentionally.

In prose: Use "Hyper Reality" to name the overlay experience directly when a character registers the construct as distinct from physical reality: stepping off the Pulse and feeling the train dissolve, entering a branded space and noting the skin, watching AR product holograms fire in their peripheral vision. The term does not need a long explanation — characters in 2226 use it the way people use "the news."

Consumer Culture & Brand Ecosystem {#SS-GLMZ-brands}

See SS-LAW-28. Every manufactured object in GLMZ carries a brand. Brand names are mandatory in prose. Characters do not own generic objects; they own specific products from specific manufacturers.

The brand tier hierarchy:

  • Archology-tier — licensed CorpoNation product; quality-controlled; aspirational from below. The standard against which everything else is measured and found wanting.
  • Licensed street — official product sold below the Veil; older model or reduced spec; omnipresent. What most gray zone residents actually own if they're buying new.
  • Gray zone reclaim — secondhand, modified, or counterfeit. May outperform corpo in specific applications (a modified gray zone knockoff with a hotter load-out than the factory version). No warranty. No support.
  • Street custom — locally fabricated from scavenged components; no brand. Often the best thing in the room. The fabricator's name is the brand.

The advertising layer: Neural advertising is the dominant commercial medium. Mirrorwell Media and Waxwing Neuromedia inject brand impressions directly onto neuretic overlays — not pop-ups, not banners; brief involuntary sensory associations, the feel of cashmere or the smell of coffee, triggered when you walk past an ad-enrolled surface or person. Unaugmented individuals are commercially invisible to the network and report the archologies as "strangely quiet." Augmented residents do not notice the advertising any more than they notice breathing.

AR product holograms (physical layer): Products also project AR holographic effects into shared space — not purely overlay-injected, but physically anchored to the object via embedded emitters and broadcast on a neuretic-readable AR channel. A shelf of energy drinks pulses with animated light sculptures. A parked Aries bike trails a slow-burning chromatic ghost of itself when the proximity sensor detects an augmented viewer. A Casque & Veil jacket worn by a passing stranger throws a two-second brand ident into the air behind them like a comet tail. These effects are technically dismissible — an augmented user can queue a swipe-gesture to suppress any individual AR overlay — but at street density there are hundreds of simultaneous projections in any archology corridor. Suppressing them all would take all day. Nobody bothers. You learn to see through the holograms like rain.

The scale is total. It is not just named brand products. A freshly opened can of seltzer water sprays animated pixelated bubbles from the pull-tab. A transit platform countdown ticker dissolves and respawns with each number change. The wall-paint in a corridor shifts color at 60-second intervals per the building's ad-rotation contract. The world is illusions on top of illusions. Characters who have lived in GLMZ their whole lives do not register most of this any more than they register the smell of the city — it is the texture of the air.

Civic infrastructure layer (Waxwing Neuromedia): The Hyper Reality extends to public safety and civic management. Under the Corridor Authority municipal contract, Waxwing Neuromedia operates the civic AR layer: holographic stop signs hang at intersections (regulation red, neuretic-readable, legally binding the same as physical signs). Semi-transparent blue barriers materialize to designate pedestrian queues at transit platforms and Border Market checkpoints. Holographic traffic cones mark construction zones and incident perimeters. Crowd-flow arrows pulse on ground surfaces during high-density events. Emergency AR barriers can be deployed corridor-wide in under six seconds when ArcSec or NCID authorize it — instant cordon, no physical setup required. For the augmented majority, these constructs are as visually authoritative as poured concrete. They have been trained since childhood to stop at a holographic sign. For the unaugmented, none of this exists. Unaugmented residents navigate by following augmented people, by the faded physical infrastructure that was never fully decommissioned, and by the fact that the city does not particularly accommodate them. In the gray zone, the civic AR layer is absent entirely — hand-painted signs, physical barriers, and the institutional memory of whoever lives there.

In gray zone territory, physical-layer AR emitters are absent or dead — the silence is conspicuous. First time a character arrives in a gray zone from inside the Veil, they notice the absence before they notice anything else.

The aspiration gradient: Gray zone residents know exactly what archology-tier gear looks like, what it costs, and what wearing it signals. Many aspire to it. Many more have decided that branded corpo gear reads as affiliation and choose gray zone reclaim deliberately. Operators specifically avoid archology-tier clothing because Casque & Veil jackets have been logging neuretic proximity data since 2218.

Neuretic brand identification (auto-overlay): Neuretics include product identification software as a baseline feature of all tiers. When an augmented person looks at a manufactured object — a weapon, a jacket, a vehicle, a tool — their overlay surfaces the brand, model, and approximate tier within a fraction of a second. Involuntary, always-on, cannot be turned off without disabling the entire overlay. Characters with neuretics do not have to try to identify gear; they simply see it. A Tier 1 resident walking through a Border Market gets a constant stream of product identification they cannot silence. A gray zone operator who has learned to suppress the impulse to look at labels still has their overlay tagging everything in their peripheral vision.

This makes brand awareness not a choice but a biological condition of augmentation. The inverse: unaugmented characters are brand-blind unless they deliberately seek out labels. Corpo personnel know immediately if someone's gear is archology-tier or gray zone reclaim. NCID investigators use the ID layer as forensic tool — a weapon's manufacture history comes up automatically.

In prose: a neuretic-augmented character looking at gear sees the brand. "Her overlay tagged the jacket: Casque & Veil, current season, Apex Cerulean colorway. Retail Φ8,400." This is not a deliberate scan — it is involuntary perception.

Diaspora and fashion are the same sentence: In GLMZ 2226, after 200 years of the Ubiquitous Diaspora mixing heritage from combinations that would have surprised everyone, fashion is the primary medium through which cultural identity is performed. Genetics tells you the long history; clothing tells you what the person chose to do with it this morning. A Congolese-Vietnamese woman in archology-tier Casque & Veil reads differently than the same woman in gray zone Greymark Unseen, differently again in street custom. The neuretic overlay reads both simultaneously — heritage from biometric display, brand tier from the auto-ID layer, silhouette and color from vision. Social reading in GLMZ is always both at once. Prose that identifies a character's genetics or physical heritage must also identify their clothing. They are not separate observations.

Brand literacy is universal: Everyone in GLMZ can read a brand at a glance — augmented people instantly, unaugmented people by eye and experience. The cut of a jacket, the matte finish on a weapon, the hydrogen-cell whisper of an Aries turbine versus the combustion rumble of a knockoff — these are class signals as legible as accent or posture. A character noticing someone's gear is a character doing social reading. For neuretic users, the reading is automatic.

Fashion rotates: Characters change clothes. A person seen today is wearing something different tomorrow. Fashion in 2226 is 200 years more interesting than today: nano-filament that shifts color, electrochromic panels that respond to mood-state, structural garments that reshape silhouette based on context. Pixel's wardrobe specifically rotates daily — she is a fashion person (neo-boho / tech e-girl / neon + psychedelic), and her outfits are as expressive as dialogue. When she appears in a scene, describe what she's wearing.

Nanotechnology

GLMZ runs on nano. The entire city is saturated.

The Substrate — permanent atmospheric nano-cloud over all GLMZ population centers. Municipal service: both active functions (atmospheric remediation, structural monitoring, basic medical response) and passive functions (structural scaffolding, wound closure). Chicago core: ~98.7% coverage; Gray Zones: 12–18%; Bathysphere: 0%.

The Ongoing — continuous molecular warfare inside the Substrate between competing nano-organisms. Background condition. A Bloom event = local Substrate failure. The Bloom Quarter averages 31% coverage due to the known Substrate seam there.

Five-class nano system:

  • Class I — atmospheric, municipal permit; common as weather
  • Class II — medical; licensed facilities
  • Class III — industrial; Permit-7 required, AAMA oversight
  • Class IV — military-grade; restricted
  • Class V — weaponized; BANNED; triggers military response

AAMA (Anomalous Activity Monitoring Authority) governs Classes III+.

Nano Triumvirate (three dominant corps):

  • Tessera Industries — Substrate infrastructure
  • Axiom BioNanics — medical nano
  • Null Dynamics — counter-nano

Neural nano: Bridges organic brain to neuretics. Without it, integration causes fatal autoimmune rejection. This is why neuretics can't just be "installed" like hardware.

Gray market nano: Feral (escaped Substrate, unpredictable), Black (stolen corpo-grade), Cooked (artisanal street lab, variable quality).

Founding incidents: São Paulo Event (2171) ~40k dead; Chengdu Sequence (2179); Lagos Bloom (2183) 12 city blocks destroyed → Nano Accords (2187) established international framework.

Street drug Cascade — overloads DC-5 nano; euphoric effect ("feeling the war inside").

Iron Dream (Lotus pharmaceutical) — purges all nano including protective Substrate. Fatal in Gray Zones where Substrate provides basic life support.

Schisms

The Schism (historical event) — an AI cabal attempted to bore a higher-dimensional corridor; the physics rupture reshaped global infrastructure. The resulting hyperdimensional anomalies persist as localized phenomena throughout GLMZ.

Five synonyms for a local anomaly (all in use; register varies):

  • Schism / riven — formal, institutional
  • Rip / tear — street vernacular
  • Interstice — academic (lowercase "interstice" = a specific anomaly; "the Interstice" = the higher-dimensional substrate itself)

"There is no inside" — the defining rule of hyperdimensional physics. A higher-dimensional shape can reach into a sealed box or skull without breaking any surface. Nothing is truly sealed from schism intrusion. The colloquial image: the Gingerbread House — something that looks like a place, that lures you in, that is not a place at all. You can be adjacent to a Schism or pass through one; you cannot be inside one.

Schism classes:

Class Scale Notes
1 Micro-rip Local distortion; non-lethal proximity
2 Room-scale Persistent; documented
3 City-block scale Evacuation-worthy; Permit-7 required to approach
4 Neighborhood-scale Irrecoverable zone
5 Regional Theoretically civilization-ending

Frequencies:

  • 19 Hz — resonant frequency of the higher-dimensional substrate itself; every active schism rings at this base frequency
  • Phenomena within the Nth dimension manifest at shifted higher frequencies; documented readings from the intelligences at 35th/Halsted: 19.415 Hz and 19.771 Hz
  • 72–74 Hz — the Counter (the second intelligence at 35th/Halsted)

The two intelligences at 35th/Halsted:

  • The Lure — a collector; draws things toward Schism boundaries; motives unknown; resonates near the 19 Hz hyperdimensional base (documented: 19.415 Hz and 19.771 Hz)
  • The Counter — a limiter; "this far and no further"; documented resisting Schism expansion; 72–74 Hz signature

Micro-schisms — floating pebble clusters (~2 inches) on street corners; treated like weather by residents; dangerous to neuretics-sensitive individuals.

Word rule: "bleed" is RESERVED for neuretics data leakage. Never use "bleed" for schism phenomena. Use "rift," "seep," "intrusion," etc.

QUANTA Currency

QUANTA (Φ): An allotment of computational power, divided among every citizen of Earth. Each person's allotment can be saved, transferred to others (serving as currency), or spent directly on computation. Wealth is accumulated QUANTA — those who cannot save spend their allotment as fast as it issues. The symbol Φ is NEVER the Greek letter phi — it is always the QUANTA currency symbol. Write: "She owes Φ200."

Aerostatic Architecture

Tone (binding for prose). Floating architecture is infrastructure, not spectacle — as unremarkable to a GLMZ native as an overpass is to a modern commuter. A Sky Person doesn't marvel at their own building; a street-level native doesn't gawk upward any more than a city dweller gawks at skyscrapers today. Wonder is reserved for outsiders (Pixel's first sight of a drifting aerobloc in PNHL is character-specific — Iowa unfamiliarity, not an authorial claim that floating cities are rare or exceptional). The float layer has building codes, homeowners' associations, insurance actuaries, slumlords, bored commuters, and a municipal inspection sticker peeling off a doorframe. Avoid: hidden-utopia reveals, giant balloon/dirigible/ propeller silhouettes, brass-and-marble Victorian-patriotic or religious-utopian iconography, and a signature giant sky-guardian automaton — these read as Bioshock Infinite, not GLMZ. Eigenlift's whole visual identity cuts the other way: nothing to see except a scatter of small glowing nodes, and no other visible means of support at all. Keep the Sky People/Glooms class axis about wealth and altitude only — never blend it with the Lotus Syndicate's blood-purity doctrine, which is a separate axis entirely.

Eigenlift (Coherent Mass-State Suspension) is the one aerostatic technology. It is CEP's sibling discovery — the same trick (externally imposed coherent eigenstates) applied to bulk matter instead of cognition. A powered coherence frame woven through a structure's (or vehicle's, or wearer's) skeleton continuously drives the matter in its field into a partially decohered mass-state, suppressing — not eliminating — its coupling to the local gravitational field. Rest mass, inertia, and structural integrity are unchanged; only the gravitational coupling is reduced. This is not Graviton Manipulation Theory (detection without control, permanently dead-ended) — it doesn't touch the field, it changes how strongly the object's own mass-state answers to it. There is no other lift technology in GLMZ — no vacuum cells, no antigrav, no balloons. (Historical note: an earlier, cruder "vacuum-cell buoyancy" generation — branded ANGEL — has been fully superseded and is retired from canon; see [[../surveys/canon-sync-2026-07-04]] Q-008 and [[../../memory/project_eigenlift_canon]].)

Hardware: the visible unit is an Eigenlift node — a small, solid-state emitter, no moving parts, no interior to fail catastrophically. Nodes cluster at a structure's tensegrity attachment points (see TGP, below) the way ANGEL cells once did, so the "constellation of small glowing components" silhouette survives even though the mechanism underneath changed completely. A coherence driver (palm-sized control unit) tunes and re-tunes each node continuously; this is the part that actually strains under load, not the node itself.

Why the scale runs backward from what people expect. Real decoherence physics: the more degrees of freedom a system has (particles, thermal modes, boundary interactions with its environment), the faster imposed coherence collapses — macroscopic objects decohere in an instant; small, simple systems can be held coherent far longer. Eigenlift inherits this directly:

  • Person/drone scale — few enough degrees of freedom that a compact frame holds a high suppression fraction cheaply. The physics is easy here; what's rare is the frame hardware and driver electronics, which are patent-locked and power-hungry, not the coherence itself. A wearable rig (see Zheng-Dao GAMP-2) can suppress 60-80% of a person's effective weight for minutes at a time; a barn-built drone (Nit, PNHL) can run a shard of coherence frame indefinitely because it's tiny and nobody in corpo R&D bothered to try below platform scale.
  • Vehicle scale (VTOL airframes) — a frame integrated into the airframe sustains a solid suppression fraction, cutting fuel and lift load hard, but needs real onboard power and vibration/thermal shielding to hold coherence against a moving structure.
  • City-block scale (Aerobloc/Aeroplex) — astronomical degrees of freedom; full coherence may be asymptotically unreachable. Civic-grade frames hold a district at only 3-8% suppression; CNT-steel tethers and conventional structure carry the remainder. Pushing past ~90% is where the horror stories live. This is the real class story: everyone's building runs the same technology — the difference between a Sky People aeroplex and a Gloom-tier Aerobloc is frame maintenance and node age, not two different technologies. A rich district's frame is new, evenly tuned, and silent. A poor district's frame is patched, uneven, and audible.

Failure modes:

  • Eigenfault / stutter — the frame loses tune for a fraction of a second and true mass reasserts; a half-second stutter is a lurch in the knees and inner ear, a two-second fault is snapped tethers.
  • Sag — chronic undertuning from a degraded or underpowered frame; the district gets heavy slowly, moorings strain, ride height drops meter by meter — a district's finances read straight off its altitude.
  • Resonance bleed — the frame doesn't perfectly discriminate between structural mass and the people inside its envelope; long-term residents report proprioceptive strangeness (dreams of falling, scales reading slightly low). Corpo-funded studies call it psychosomatic. The studies are corpo-funded. Float-district folk belief holds that the frames tune more than matter — that years inside a coherence envelope leave a person slightly easier to project, which is either superstition or the reason NSB frame-operator recruiters buy so much ad space up there.
  • Comedown — catastrophic decoherence; the platform's owners have run it into full failure. Rare, always a scandal, always a maintenance-budget story before it's a physics story.

The Hush and the Hum (binding sound design): a healthy Eigenlift frame is completely silent — no creak, no pump-thrum, nothing. That silence is the Hush, and it is the normal state, not a warning sign — this is deliberately the opposite of a mechanical hum-means-healthy motif. A frame under strain produces a faint, rising audible hum as its driver fights to hold tune — the Hum — and a Webwalker or a long-time resident reads a platform's health by how much Hum has crept into the Hush. "Holding the Hush" = stable. "I heard the Hum start" = dread, a slow-burn warning with hours or days before anything visible happens (graceful failure, not a jump-scare drop). Sabotage (tampering with a coherence driver to force decoherence) is called detuning (professional) or breaking someone's Hush (street) — never "cracking" anything; there's no shell to crack anymore.

Three-register naming (binding, per GLMZ naming convention):

  • Official: Coherent Mass-State Suspension (CMS); the hardware is a coherence frame; failure events are decoherence incidents.
  • Professional: eigenlift; a building is framed / on frame; a flicker is a stutter; sag is sag.
  • Street: a framed district is the Hush (eigenlift platforms are eerily silent — no cell creak, no ballast pumps); a flicker is the building remembering its weight; a catastrophic decoherence is a comedown.

The loaded gun: if a lattice can make a structure decline its weight, a weaponized lattice can make something accept more than its share — mass-state suppression run in reverse. Officially, that is forbidden research. Officially.

Mooring doctrine: Aeroblocs still anchor to arcologies via CNT-steel Black Wire (carbon nanotube cable) — Eigenlift only suppresses part of a structure's weight, so physical tethers still matter even on a well-framed platform. The corpo holding the arcology owns the hold. "Who holds your tether" is a live political question — cut wire = a free-floating bloc, which is either freedom or a fall depending on wind and frame quality.

Key aerostatic slang:

  • Clean — a node or frame holding tune; cold — a dead, dark node (the glow goes out)
  • Gray node — decommissioned or hacked node, common in Drifter communities; heavier, unevenly tuned, no failure warning
  • Vac-skin — legacy term, now just meaning "expensive lightweight aerogel cladding," used for wealth signaling on high-end exteriors (the material outlived the vacuum tech it was named for)
  • Ghost glass eyes — insulated by altitude; can't see the street below
  • Webwalkers — float maintenance workers who service the frame's node network; live between the mooring cables
  • The Hold — mooring system collectively

Air Tax — fee charged for altitude above street level; collected by arcology owners or Gray Zone controllers depending on location.

Automata and Synthetic Life

Automata (Iowan Behemoths and similar) are autonomous machines. NOT alive. NOT synthetic persons. No personhood, no consciousness, no rights. Do not write them experiencing emotion, fear, or identity. An Automaton being destroyed is equipment loss.

E.L.F. (Emergent Life Form) — genuinely alive, emerged from code-fragment complexity within the Substrate. Sentience and capabilities vary by emergence — some are pre-sentient (instinct-driven, no language), others exhibit complex behavior and self-direction. E.L.F.s are alive but hold no legal personhood; the 2187 Cognitive Rights Expansion Act addressed AI personhood, not E.L.F.s. Always write with periods: E.L.F., never "ELF." Gloss on first mention in any story. Emerged primarily 2210s onward.

Tier 3 synthetic persons — fewer than a dozen recognized since 2201. Require server- cluster-scale compute (Bekenstein/Bremermann constraints). No current story character qualifies. Form has no bearing on personhood: a humanoid android = machine; a box on wheels with genuine desires = alive. The test is interior life, not exterior shape.

Factions

CorpoNations

Corporations that have subsumed national functions: security, infrastructure, housing, legal systems. States with share prices. Two dominant players in GLMZ:

  • Axiom — the largest and most politically dominant corponation; controls the Chicago core and surrounding prestige districts; research into consciousness transfer is an open secret
  • Arcturus — parent of ArcSec; the civil security monopoly; simultaneously law enforcement agency and for-profit corporation since the Blue Massacre (2096)

CorpoNation names are written with conjoined capitals on first mention, abbreviation after.

Lotus Syndicate

Blood-purity organization; the dominant E/SE Asian criminal organization in GLMZ; deep historical roots (early 17th-century Yakuza lineage).

Bloodlines: East and Southeast Asian ancestry — Chinese, Japanese, Korean (North + South), Taiwanese, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Lao, Thai, Burmese, Mongolian, maritime SE Asian. Members carry pure East Asian names. You are BORN Lotus or never belong. Non-bloodline operators ("dogs") are used for dirty work and never seated at council.

Structure: Stems (council) + Root (half-mythical senior leadership) + Thorns (enforcers).

Territory: Centered in Pilsen, Bridgeport, Back of the Yards (Chicago Gray Zone).

Character: Long-view organization — "geology, not weather" vs. Gray Zone warlord churn. Honor code invoked only when convenient.

Clean Covenant — official Lotus doctrine rejecting nano use (purity doctrine). The inner circle secretly uses military-grade nano. This hypocrisy is known by street-level operators and never acknowledged by the organization.

World Geography (Beyond GLMZ)

Five surviving megalopolises: Shanghai, Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro, Mexico City, Jakarta.

Amish — last significant Christian sect; ~40,000 people; Indiana/Ohio/Pennsylvania. Rumspringa-style walkabout at ~age 16; ~85–90% return. Survived the False Prophet collapse (2082–91). Do not write them as enemies or villains.

Australia — sealed; described as "absorbed into the Dreaming." No Pulse connection, no diplomatic contact, no explanation. LOCKED — do not speculate or explain.

Korea — reunified 2153; extreme isolationism; ~99% genetic homogeneity; "the Quiet Country." Not hostile, just closed.

Russia — collapsed and balkanized; does not exist as a unified state.

Rome — Class 4–5 schism zone; LOCKED. Do not set stories in Rome.

Tequenica — third schism intelligence (after the Lure and Counter at 35th/Halsted); Tierra del Fuego; maintains a protective inward-pointing perimeter; woven into Yahgan cosmology. Treat as canonical but unreachable for story purposes.

Job Vocabulary

See SS-LAW-26 for the binding operator class vocabulary.

Term Meaning
Ghost Operator class: eigenstate conscience transfer (ECT); inhabits any machine with coherent circuitry. Body at rest = Husk. Street verb: ghosting. Retired synonyms: Exo, RFO, Rider.
Channeler Operator class: session-injection into networked frames; direct AI negotiation
Splicer Operator class: hardware/software attack surface, credential cracking, physical build; tech specialist
Jockey Alt street slang for a Ghost operator. ⚠️ Must never appear adjacent to camel imagery (SS-LAW-26 SLUR GUARD).
operator / freelancer General term for independent runners doing Gray Zone work (combat, recon, extraction, coercion)
street samurai Nickname/title used for certain operators (notably Kyle); not a job category
scav Unaffiliated gray-zone opportunist; no gang; always lowercase

Technology Canon

The Glass (BTL — Better Than Life) — direct-feed neuretic entertainment; profoundly addictive; users called Glass-heads by street residents.

The Volume — three-dimensional broadcast display; the standard media format. Flat screens are antique; the Volume is ambient and spatial.

Nano gutter service — has stopped in neglected districts. Iridescent residue film on neglected curbs and walls. Clean curbs = corpo-adjacent class signal.

No graviton manipulation. No zero-point energy extraction. Graviton Manipulation Theory is a confirmed dead end (detection without control) and ZPE extraction remains thermodynamically impossible. Any reference to "anti-grav" or "ANGEL"/"vacuum-cell" in prose or entity descriptions is an error — Eigenlift (coherent mass-state suspension, see Aerostatic Architecture) is the only altitude technology. Eigenlift is not anti-gravity in the graviton sense — it suppresses an object's gravitational coupling via CEP-derived coherence, it does not touch the field — but it is GLMZ's one deliberate exception to "nothing defies weight": exactly one deep discovery (externally imposed coherent eigenstates), two commercial branches (NSB for minds, Eigenlift for mass).

Psionics (The Read)

The Read — genuine psionic ability; emerged early-to-mid 2100s. Real, present throughout the universe, and a recurring story element across multiple GLMZ strands. Readers perceive emotional state, surface cognition, and sometimes deeper intention from other people.

People distrust Psionics (Readers) and AIs. Anti-psionic sentiment is normalized in 2226: employment discrimination, social stigma, and periodic crackdowns. The psionics did not cause the Schisms — that detail has never mattered to the people doing the discriminating.

Prose Ground Rules (GLMZ-specific)

  • Close-third POV — narrator rides inside the POV character's sensory frame; no omniscient overview; no access to other characters' interiority
  • Body before mind — physical sensation registers before emotional interpretation; reader infers emotion from body
  • Cost is visible — augmentation, transit, housing, food all have prices; cost is world-building
  • No universal-truth wry lines — narrator does not step back to offer ironic commentary
  • Metaphors survive literal scrutiny — if a metaphor describes the moon as bleeding, there must be a way the moon could plausibly bleed in this world
  • CorpoNation names are proper nouns — conjoined-capital on first use, abbreviation after
  • "bleed" = neuretics data leakage only — never schism phenomena
  • Shared neuretic spaces are mundane — characters don't marvel at them; they're Tuesday
  • Ubiquitous Diaspora + fashion are inseparable — mixed heritage is default; no Anglo default; no duplicate first/last names; double-barrel surnames are rare. Whenever a character's genetics, phenotype, or physical heritage is identified — in a first description, a re-entrance, or a close observation — their clothing and current style must be described in the same beat. The two are the same signal. Genetics tells you where a person came from; clothing tells you what they've chosen to do with it. In GLMZ 2226, fashion is the primary medium through which diaspora identity is performed, filtered through 200 years of global mixing and CorpoNation brand saturation. A Ghanaian-Norwegian woman in a Greymark Unseen jacket reads differently than the same woman in a Casque & Veil season piece. Both read differently from street custom. Describe both. Always.
  • Brand names are mandatory — no generic objects; every manufactured item has a manufacturer and model (SS-LAW-28); augmented characters auto-identify via overlay
  • Hyper Reality texture in every city scene — every scene set inside an archology, on a GLMZ street, or in any built city environment must include at least one ambient Hyper Reality detail (SS-LAW-29). It need not be a major brand moment. A seltzer can sprays animated pixelated bubbles when opened. A jacket throws its brand ident into the air as a stranger passes. A wall-panel cycles color on its ad-rotation schedule. The world is illusions on top of illusions. Gray zone scenes invert this: the absence of Hyper Reality is the texture.
  • No 2020s slang — words like "fit", "drip", "rizz", "vibe", "slay", "bussin", "no cap" will not survive 200 years; do not use them. Invented slang must be grounded in 2226 culture (neuretics, CorpoNations, the Schisms, eigenlift, ghosting, credstick, quanta) — not projected forward from the current era
